Welcome to Lodestar Farm!

Hi Folks:blank image

blank imageWelcome to Lodestar Farm, breeder of registered Black Clydesdales, located in Buchanan, TN. The farm is owned by Jim and Meredith Vajda who run it on a day-to-day basis. We hope this virtual visit will give you an idea of what we offer and intrigue you enough to plan a real visit in the future.

Lodestar may be defined in two ways: as a guiding principle, and also as a goal. Both terms apply to our operation. We strive to breed and raise big, healthy, well-mannered Black Clydesdales, with correct conformation and gentle dispositions. We also want to expand the knowledge and appreciation of the breed, and demonstrate that these horses have uses far beyond the traditional ones of farming and logging. Clydesdales truly are family-and-kid-friendly, and should be considered by anyone interested in a pleasure horse, whether for dressage, trail-riding, cart-hauling, hunter-jumper shows or Western pleasure shows.

Here at Lodestar Farm, our Clydesdales are the center of offerings in lessons, training, workshops, horse camps, breeding and sales. But we are also a boarding and training facility for all breeds of horses.  Our programs are growing and we're expanding the farm as needed to meet demand. So please spend some time reading about us and our horses, and feel free to contact us. We will gladly help in any way we can, as partial payment to all the folks who helped us when we started keeping these magnificent horses.

Clydesdale History

The forefathers of today's Clydesdales probably originated in the Middle Ages, when the destrier, a type of horse rather than a particular breed, was used as a war horse. The destrier was favored by well-armored knights going into battle because the heavy build, short back, powerful hindquarters, strong bone and arched neck allowed them to easily coil and spring to turn, sprint, and stop. These heavy horses had the power to pull weapons and supply wagons and their disposition allowed them to remain calm under fire.

The modern Clydesdales' ancestors were used for activities such as jousting.

Our Farm

Lodestar Farm is located on 91 acres in northwest TN, near the KY border, in the midst of corn, soybean, and tobacco farms. We are 20 minutes from the Murry State University Campus.  Our farm is flat and bordered on the north side by McGhee Branch Creek and on the east side by the Blood River, so named because of a fierce battle that took place during the War of Northern Aggression where the casualties turned the river red with blood. We have a 10-acre hybrid Bermuda grass field that provides almost all our hay for the winter, a 30-acre pasture that’s cross-fenced into six five-acre-plus turnout pastures, and an unfenced 23-acre field that we’ve planted in hybrid Bermuda grass this year. If our new 23 -acre field works out, then next year we plan to turn the 10-acre Bermuda field into two five acre turnouts for the horses.  Our fencing is painted black, with red gates, and our barns are black, providing a unique look to our farm.
